Meditation joins array of tools for depression», Kenton Robinson THE ASSOCIATED PRESS.

Nearly 19 million men and women have a depressive disorder in the United States each year, with almost twice as many women suffering as men, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Less than one-third of those people get treatment, in part, because of the stigma that surrounds the illness, though, with treatment, many people recover from it, according to the NIMH.

http://www.telegram.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061203/NEWS/612030490/1008/NEWS02

The Mind and Life Institute (MLI) has just released Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain: How a New Science Reveals Our Extraordinary Potential to Transform, written by Sharon Begley.

This book takes the reader to the Mind and Life meeting, Neuroplasticity: The Neuronal Substrates of Learning and Transformation, at Dharamsala, India in 2004.
http://www.mindandlife.org/conf04.html

Begley, one of the world's leading science journalists, uses the meeting as a springboard to survey the state of neuroplasticity.

MLRN Discussion List , 11.01.07.

Thanks for bringing up an interesting subject.  The comments (with which I agree) that IQ as a measure of mental function leaves out a lot of important features of the function of a mind.

Some years ago I experienced a paradigm shift when I realized just how un-useful IQ actually is by itself.  The point being that IQ as we revere it in the western and capitalistic world is overrated.  Other features of mind are much more valuable to the individual experiencing "high IQ," and for those that come in contact with this sort of individual.

At one time I had the opportunity to work for a very difficult and ill tempered man.  This fellow is very smart in the conventional sense.  He has a lot of energy, he has the courage to be entrepreneurial, he can think creatively, he certainly has a good education, a good mind for making connections about things and principles, he has a good memory, and he can even be charming if he sees a need.  Without testing him I believe the consensus would be he has a pretty high IQ.  However, he has no idea how to treat people around him well, he is not ethical or moral in his dealings with other beings.  His family (fractured now) finds him very difficult to be around.  His employees to a person can barely abide him, he is not trustworthy in any normal sense of the word, many past employees myself included had to sever the work relationship for their own mental and emotional well being.   He is very smart, extremely difficult to be around, mostly unapproachable with love or compassion, and very sad too see from outside his sphere of influence.

At the same time I was working for this gentleman, my wife's aunt was becoming less healthy and moved into a health care/elder care facility.  We started visiting her more often and I came to know her better in her last years.  Dolly was in her late fifties and had Down Syndrome.  Dolly was an incredibly loving person, she could tell anyone how happy she was to see them and you knew it was true.  Her good nature just shined out.  She was generous and kind.   On her birthday the first year in the home (and in subsequent years) I was amazed to see the literally hundreds of cards she received.  Some correspondents had not seen her in decades, some were childhood friends that never lost track of her.  I can't exaggerate the positive effect she had on her social environment and the people she met and loved.  This was not a love of attachment, it was a joy at simply being with another person. ( I am weeping now in gratitude.)

Dolly could read bit, nothing difficult or complex.  She could write likewise.  Her memory was pretty good for people and social events, but not so good for the items that would get notice in an IQ test.  She couldn't manage her own financial affairs or hold a job.  Perhaps that is an exaggeration, but she never needed to take a job and never lacked for caring people willing to help her out.  Although she never held a job Dolly was incredibly valuable to myself and to many others that knew her.

This concurrent juxtaposition of the very smart and emotionally crippled with the not so smart and emotionally blessed really showed me the correct view of human mental facilities.  Having a high IQ is next to useless if you haven't any wisdom or positive connection with other beings.

IQ without a moral and ethical base from which to operate is worse than dangerous.  I don't need much convincing to see that meditation within a context of morality and ethics generates an ever improving WQ (wisdom quotient) that far outstrips IQ in importance.

Best regards,
Mike

Mind and Life Institute

Applications will be taken beginning January 15, 2007 for the 2007 Mind and Life Summer Research Institute (MLSRI) to be held at the Garrison Institute (www.garrisoninstitute.org) in Garrison, New York, from Sunday, June 3, through Saturday, June 9, 2007.

The purpose of the Mind and Life Summer Research Institute is to advance collaborative research among behavioral scientists, neuroscientists, and biomedical researchers based on a process of inquiry, dialogue, and in some cases, collaboration, with Buddhist contemplative practitioners and scholars and those in other contemplative traditions.

Долгосрочная цель состоит в том, чтобы создать новое поколение behavioral scientists, cognitive/affective neuroscientists, clinicians, and contemplative scholar/practitioners interested in exploring the potential influences of meditation and other contemplative practices on mind, behavior, brain function, and health. This includes examining the potential role of contemplative methods for characterizing human experience and consciousness from a neuroscience perspective.

The Faculty will consist of scientists and clinicians, as well as Buddhist and other contemplative practitioner/scholars. The meeting will be restricted to 125 participants, as innovative and interdisciplinary scientific conversations and potential collaborations and new projects are more likely to develop successfully with a limited number of committed participants.

The overriding theme of the meeting will be to foster a meaningful
dialogue between modern science and psychology on the one hand, and the domain of contemplative practice on the other. These two epistemologies constitute different ways of investigating and understanding the mind.
...
The MLSRI is intended to be a novel kind of experience, unlike other conferences that you may have attended. The MLSRI takes place in a quasi-retreat environment that is intended to promote exploration and understanding of contemplative practices both on the intellectual level (through presentations and dialogues) and the experiential level (through formal meditation practice and periods of introspection and silence).
...
For a more detailed overview of the MLSRI please go to
http://www.mindandlife.org/sri07.ml.summer.institute.html

The application process is online only. No paper applications, either mailed or faxed, will be accepted. To apply now, please go to:
http://www.mindandlife.org/sri07.application.process.html

Applications close at 7:00 PM EST on Wednesday, February 28, 2007. Interested applicants are advised to apply early. Applications submitted after February 28th will not be accepted.

Please forward this message to anyone who might be interested.

Best regards,

Mary Ann McCarty

Mind and Life Institute "Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain".
http://www.mindandlife.org/pubtrn.html
http://www.amazon.com/Train-Your-Mind-Change-Brain/dp/1400063906/sr=1-1/qid=1166809550/ref=sr_1_1/002-8338227-8288045?ie=UTF8&s=books.

В этой книге представлены труды конференции по нейропластичности «The Neuronal Substrates of Learning and Transformation», Dharamsala, India in 2004 г.

В заключение статьи в Times она пишет: «"The discovery of neuroplasticity, in particular the power of the mind to change the brain, is still too new for scientists, let alone the rest of us, to grasp its full meaning. But even as it offers new therapies for illnesses of the mind, it promises something more fundamental: a new understanding of what it means to be human."
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1580438-4,00.html

Статью "How Thinking Can Change the Brain" в Wall Street Journal она начинает с вопроса, который задал ЕСДЛ американскому нейрохирургу 10 лет назад: может ли ум изменить мозг?
http://online.wsj.com/public/search/page/3_0466.html?KEYWORDS=How+Thinking+Can+Change+the+Brain&x=13&y=9.

"Mental practice resulted in a similar reorganization" of the brain, написал позже Pascual-Leone.

MLRN Discussion List, 24.01.07.

Dear Colleague,
As a trusted and valued member of the community of those engaged in mindfulness-based research and practice, we would like to request a few minutes of your time. The individuals named below (and others) have begun an exploration and discussion of the possibility of forming a society for professionals engaged in the development, practice, application and research of mindfulness-based interventions. We have frequently observed (in ourselves and in our colleagues) a strong desire for a professional community that could both support and further our work in a variety of fulfilling and important ways.

As part of this exploration, we have put together a very brief online interest survey that we would respectfully ask you to complete. It will take less than five minutes, but your contribution would be invaluable to us in determining how to proceed with this effort.

Additionally, we ask that if you are aware of others engaged in similar work, that you forward this email and link to them, so that we can get their input as well.
It is our intention to present the results of this survey at the upcoming Fifth Annual International Conference on Integrating Mindfulness-Based Approaches and Interventions into Medicine, Health Care and the Larger Society in Worcester MA, and to continue this dialogue in that venue.

If you are willing to assist us in this effort, simply click on the following link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=143182007298

If you have specific comments or questions about this endeavour please contact Steve Hickman (shickman@ucsd.edu) or Linda Carlson (l.carlson@ucalgary.ca).  We thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.

https://lists.wisc.edu/read/messages?id=1628901#1628901
