If your nimitta appears at the place where the breath touches, is stable, and appears as the breath itself, and the breath as the nimitta, then forget about the breath, and be aware of just the nimitta. By moving your mind from the breath to the nimitta, you will be able to make further progress. As you keep your mind on the nimitta, the nimitta becomes whiter and whiter, and when it is white like cotton wool, it is the uggaha-nimitta.

You should determine to keep your mind calmly concentrated on the white uggaha-nimitta for one, two, three hours, or more. If you can keep your mind fixed on the uggaha-nimitta for one or two hours, it should become clear, bright, and brilliant. This is then the pañibhàga-nimitta (counterpart sign). Determine and practise to keep your mind on the pañibhàga-nimitta for one, two, or three hours. Practise until you succeed.

At this stage you will reach either access (upacàra) or absorption (appanà) concentration. It is called access concentration because it is close to and precedes jhàna. Absorption concentration is jhàna.

Both types of concentration have the pañibhàga-nimitta as their object. The only difference between them is that in access concentration the jhàna factors are not fully developed. For this reason bhavaïgas still occur, and one can fall into bhavaïga (life-continuum consciousness). The yogi will say that everything stopped, and may even think it is Nibbàna. In reality the mind has not stopped, but the yogi is just not sufficiently skilled to discern this, as the bhavaïgas are very subtle.

[Kaccayana:] "Lord, 'Right view, right view,' it is said. To what extent is there right view?"

[The Buddha:] "By & large, Kaccayana, this world is supported by (takes as its object) a polarity, that of existence & non-existence. But when one sees the origination of the world as it actually is with right discernment, 'non-existence' with reference to the world does not occur to one. When one sees the cessation of the world as it actually is with right discernment, 'existence' with reference to the world does not occur to one.

"By & large, Kaccayana, this world is in bondage to attachments, clingings (sustenances), & biases. But one such as this does not get involved with or cling to these attachments, clingings, fixations of awareness, biases, or obsessions; nor is he resolved on 'my self.' He has no uncertainty or doubt that, when there is arising, only stress is arising; and that when there is passing away, only stress is passing away. In this, one's knowledge is independent of others. It is to this extent, Kaccayana, that there is right view."

Abhidharmakośabhāṣya by Vasubandhu – Chapter Eight: Exposition of the Meditative Attainments:
[Question:] – If the meditations (dhyāna), in their nature, are meditative attainment (samāpatti), should one then understand that all concentrations [samādhi], wholesome, unwholesome, or nondefined, are meditation?
[Answer:] – No. It is only the concentration endowed with certain excellences (prakarṣayukta) that receives the name of meditation (dhyāna). Likewise, in the world, it is the sun that is called maker of light (bhāskara), not the firefly (khadyotaka).

[Objection:] – But if meditation (dhyāna) is concentration endowed with members, how can defiled (kliṣṭa) concentration, i.e., “enjoyable” concentration or concentration associated with enjoyment (āsvādanasaṃprayukta; see viii. 5–6), receive the name of meditation?
[Reply:] – Because it is false (mithyā) contemplation of the object (upanidhyāna).35
[Objection:] – But this obviously entails false conclusions. (As a matter of fact, one practices false contemplation of the object with a thought in the grip of attachment to pleasure [kāmarāga]: and this stage cannot be meditation.)
[Reply:] – No. We reserve the name of meditation (dhyāna) for the defiled state that resembles (pratirūpa) true meditation; as, in the world, one calls rotten seed (pūtibīja), not a pebble, etc., but a thing that resembles the seed, although incapable of germinating. Likewise, one speaks of a bhikṣu with a transgression of defeat (pārājika bhikṣu; iv. 39cd). – And (the Scriptures) speak of unwholesome meditations.37

The Blessed One said: "Now what, monks, is noble right concentration with its supports & requisite conditions? Any singleness of mind equipped with these seven factors — right view, right resolve, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, & right mindfulness — is called noble right concentration with its supports & requisite conditions.

[1] "Of those, right view is the forerunner. And how is right view the forerunner? One discerns wrong view as wrong view, and right view as right view. This is one's right view.

"And what is wrong view? 'There is nothing given, nothing offered, nothing sacrificed. There is no fruit or result of good or bad actions. There is no this world, no next world, no mother, no father, no spontaneously reborn beings; no priests or contemplatives who, faring rightly & practicing rightly, proclaim this world & the next after having directly known & realized it for themselves.' This is wrong view.

"And what is right view? Right view, I tell you, is of two sorts: There is right view with effluents [asava], siding with merit, resulting in the acquisitions [of becoming]; and there is noble right view, without effluents, transcendent, a factor of the path.

"And what is the right view that has effluents, sides with merit, & results in acquisitions? 'There is what is given, what is offered, what is sacrificed. There are fruits & results of good & bad actions. There is this world & the next world. There is mother & father. There are spontaneously reborn beings; there are priests & contemplatives who, faring rightly & practicing rightly, proclaim this world & the next after having directly known & realized it for themselves.' This is the right view that has effluents, sides with merit, & results in acquisitions.

"And what is the right view that is without effluents, transcendent, a factor of the path? The discernment, the faculty of discernment, the strength of discernment, analysis of qualities as a factor for Awakening, the path factor of right view of one developing the noble path whose mind is noble, whose mind is free from effluents, who is fully possessed of the noble path. This is the right view that is without effluents, transcendent, a factor of the path.

"One tries to abandon wrong view & to enter into right view: This is one's right effort. One is mindful to abandon wrong view & to enter & remain in right view: This is one's right mindfulness. Thus these three qualities — right view, right effort, & right mindfulness — run & circle around right view.

Ну и в первой цитате их Коши: "It is only the concentration endowed with certain excellences (prakarṣayukta) that receives the name of meditation (dhyāna)."

Meditation is, indeed, excellent [prakarṣa]: it is a concentration endowed with “members” (aṅgasamāyukta; viii. 10), that functions by means of calm abiding (śamatha) and insight (vipaśyanā), harnessed to the yoke (yuganaddhavāhin, that is to say: where calm abiding and insight are in equilibrium or integrated),32 which is called in the Sūtra happiness in this life (dṛṣṭadharmasukhavihāra; viii. 27) and easy route (sukhapratipad; vi. 66), the path by which one knows better and easily.33 This is therefore the excellent concentration that is called meditation (dhyāna). <132>

Про неё и написано "which is called in the Sūtra happiness in this life (dṛṣṭadharmasukhavihāra; viii. 27) and easy route (sukhapratipad; vi. 66), the path by which one knows better and easily."
