+
Abhidharmasamuccaya: 49. What is sluggishness or drowsiness (middha)? It is the narrowing of the mind (cetaso’bhisaṃkṣepaḥ) belonging to delusion, as a result of some cause for sluggishness (middhanimitta), wholesome (kuśala), unwholesome (akuśala) or neutral (avyākṛta), timely (kāle) or untimely (akāle), appropriate (yukta) or inappropriate (ayukta). Its function is to provide a basis for neglecting what should be done (kṛtyātipatti).
Abhidhammatha Sangaha: (12) Sloth (thina): Sloth is sluggishness or dullness of mind. Its characteristic is lack of driving power. Its function is to dispel energy. It is manifested as the sinking of the mind. Its proximate cause is unwise attention to boredom, drowsiness, etc.
(13) Torpor (middha): Torpor is the morbid state of the mental factors. Its characteristic is unwieldiness. Its function is to smother. It is manifested as drooping, or as nodding and sleepiness. Its proximate cause is the same as that of sloth.
Sloth and torpor always occur in conjunction, and are opposed to energy (viriya). Sloth is identified as sickness of consciousness (cittagelanna), torpor as sickness of the mental factors (kayagelanna). As a pair they constitute one of the five hindrances, which is overcome by initial application (vitakka).
Abhidharmakosa-bhasya: 8. Sleepiness (middha), (i. 27; vii. 11d), the compression (abhisaṃkṣepa) of thought that makes it
incapable of commanding the body (kāyasaṃdhāraṇāsamartha): [it is only defiled sleepiness that is an envelopment].502
Sleepiness can be wholesome, unwholesome, or non-defined; it is only defiled sleepiness that is an envelopment (ii. 30cd).
Abhidharmakosa-bhasya: Why do torpor (styāna) and sleepiness (middha), restlessness (auddhatya) and regret (kaukṛtya), constitute, as groups, two hindrances?
59bc. Two hindrances [i.e., (1) torpor and sleepiness, and (2) restlessness and regret] make up one hindrance, because they have the same opposite, the same nourishment, the same function.556
“Opposite” (vipākṣa), i.e., counteragent (pratipakṣa), counter-nourishment (anāhāra);
1. The Sūtra teaches that torpor (styāna) and sleepiness (middha) have the same nourishment [āhāra], the same counter-nourishment:
What is the nourishment of torpor–sleepiness (styāna-middha)? Five factors, that is to say, exhaustion (tandrī),557 disgust (arati),558 yawning (vijṛmbhikā),559 uneven consumption of food (bhakte ’samatā),560 and sluggishness of thought (cetaso līnatva).561
What is its counter-nourishment? [9 b] Perception of light (ālokasaṃjñā).562
Torpor and sleepiness have the same function or task (kṛtya, kriyā): rendering thought languid (līna).
Abhidharmakosa-bhasya: Torpor–sleepiness (styāna-middha) destroys the element of understanding (prajñāskandha). |
